Parent With Distinction Award May 2010

At the May 20th meeting of Spruce Grove Composite High School's School Council, Carole Ibsen was awarded one of 10 awards given throughout the province for being a "Parent With Distinction".

Below is an edited version of the nomination submitted by Don Boomer Secretary of Spruce Grove Composite High School's School Council.

I have known Carole for a number of years. I first met Carole in her role as Chair of the Woodhaven School Council. Later I participated in courses she provided to the Greystone Centennial Middle School, School Council and as a participant in developing a Council of School Councils for PSD 70. Our children were also involved in a number of pre-school programs at the same time. Most recently I have worked with Carole on the Spruce Grove Composite School Council. Carole has been a model and promoter of parental involvement in education from  Pre-natal to Post Secondary.

Pre-School:

1. Commitment to Parenting and Community Leadership – During an unexpected and somewhat difficult pregnancy (she is diabetic), Carole continued to give leadership to the Business Women’s Association of Singapore.

2. Researching Parenting Options for Herself and Others: Carole always looks for community programs for her daughter and recommends them to parents. Some of the first ones to participate in were gymnastics and music programs.

3. Secretary of the local Play School society.

K-6:

1. Field Trip Coordinator: Each year Carole made sure that her daughter’s class got their share of the field trip money and that the field trips were relevant to the curriculum and the best she could find.

2. During these years she worked with her MLA and others to develop a Uniting for Children network and had students attend the provincial forum.

Grades 7-9:

In her daughter’s grades 7-12 years, she was either, School Council Chair or past chair. In these roles she not only revived two school councils but trained a replacement for herself

1. In her first year as Chair she took on a task that everyone said was impossible and that was to get a paved parking lot that was safe for the students at Woodhaven Middle School. She worked with the parents, administration, school board trustee, and her local MLA to bring this dream to reality the following summer.

2. Recruited Parents at every opportunity like Open House, and parent teacher interviews. advising incoming parents of the new parking lot and also informing them of how they could become involved in School Council.

3. Alberta’s Centennial year, she contacted her local Centennial Ambassador to get trees planted around the Woodhaven Middle School.

4. Revised the by laws of the school council and helped other school councils in Spruce Grove get started in this process

5. Separated the school council from the fundraising arm of the school, and establishing a fundraising committee.

6. Recruited and trained a chair to replace herself.

Grades 10-12:

1. The first year she worked on replacing the Parent Advisory Committee with a School Council.

2. Involved in School Council Development seminars and helping other School Councils.

3. Recruited parents, teachers and students to be involved in School Council.

4. She has started Parents As Coaches (an initiative to get parents involved in the education of their children).

5. Models parent coaching by helping write resumes, visiting universities etc. etc. etc. and bringing back her experiences to School Council.

6. Advocating Seminars for Parents: This year we had about 110 parents and students out to a scholarship seminar at the High School  and we  hope to have similar events next year.

7. Helped start a Council of School Councils for our school division.

8. Involved in several events relating to Speak Out and the Inspiring Education dialogue including the forum and hosting a local conversation for our school, which was open to the community.

9. Her involvement at the community and school board level includes participation in the Education Committee, working with her school board trustees and MLA and attending community events to make sure parental and School Council concerns are represented.

Future:

Carole is not retiring from giving leadership to involvement in education. She plans to develop Parents As Coaches into a network of Parents, teachers, students and community members to promote involvement in education, not only at the K-12 level but also at the pre-school and post-secondary levels....

Sincerely,
Don Boomer

Secretary
Spruce Grove Composite High School, School Council
